Adding an automated medication dispensing system to your simulation lab is exciting but it can also be a daunting task for educators who are not familiar with the advanced technology. Thankfully, the SimServeRx™ medication management system is specifically designed for ease of use with pre-programmed patient profiles that make it ready to “plug and play” right away in your sim lab. Continue reading to learn more about what to expect when a SimServeRx™ Medication Dispensing Cabinet or Bedside Administration Cart arrives on your campus.

Initial Training

SimServeRx™ Dispensing Cabinets and Advanced Bedside Administration Carts include on-site installation and training to help educators seamlessly integrate automated med dispensing training into their curricula and healthcare simulations. After the units are uncrated and all of the hardware components are tested, educators are shown how to stock the drawers with simulated medications, access the pre-programmed patient profiles and use the SimReset feature to run the same scenario repeatedly for skills validations. Additional topics include how to create new patient profiles and order sets, inventory medications and add new medications to the drug library. In case educators have questions after training is completed, a SimServeRx™ Quick Start Guide is provided along with contact information for 24/7 customer support.

Pre-Programmed Patient Profiles

SimServeRx™ Dispensing Cabinets and Advanced Bedside Administration Carts include 10 pre-programmed adult patient profiles with common medical-surgical nursing conditions. Each profile contains a separate document for instructors and students:

These profiles allow instructors to simulate the entire beginning of the shift including report, review of lab results, care planning and medication administration. A variety of oral, injected and inhaled medications are included so the profiles can be used for demonstrations and skills validations with students of all skill levels. Common medication errors in nursing are embedded into several of the profiles so students can be challenged to use their critical thinking skills to decide which medications should be administered to the patient as prescribed, and which must be clarified with the physician. As a final convenience for instructors, simulated medication packages are available for all of the patient profiles:

Final thoughts
