Training headwalls are specifically designed to create simulated patient environments for healthcare education. There are many configurations, including functional or non-functional, horizontal or vertical, and wall-mounted or mobile. Choosing the right type of training headwall can be a challenge for educators. Continue reading our Training Headwall Guide to learn more about the different types of training headwalls.

Non-Functioning Headwalls - Simulated Training Tool

Non-functioning headwalls are the least expensive option for educators. They provide air, suction and oxygen connections without functioning air or suction. Non-functioning headwalls are well suited for demonstrating basic patient care skills. Non-functioning headwalls are designed to be mounted horizontally on the wall. Surface mounting is ideal for existing labs while recessed mounting is suitable for new construction.

Functioning Wall-Mounted Headwalls - Advanced Simulation Training

SimLabSolutions Mirage 27.5” Simulated Surface Mounted Headwall

DM# HW010802

Functioning headwalls generate vacuum, air, and simulated oxygen by connecting to a silent external air compressor. This simple design incorporates distinctive features to simulate a real patient care environment. They are well suited for advanced skills validations and high fidelity simulations. Functioning Headwalls are mounted to the wall surface, making them ideal for new and existing simulation labs. They are available in horizontal and vertical configurations. This solution is thousands of dollars less than a traditional centralized system with air, oxygen, and vacuum. The silent air compressor produces accurate flow rates for air, suction and simulated oxygen using medical-grade outlets and flows meters identical to those found in any hospital’s patient room.

Functioning Mobile Headwalls - Transferrable Simulation Training

Functioning Headwalls for Mobilized Compressors

Some functioning headwalls have rear connections for use with a centralized air compressor. Horizontal and vertical configurations are available to fit into any lab space. Centralized compressors are ideal for lab spaces undergoing new construction or remodeling. One central compressor can provide suction and simulated medical gases for up to 24 headwalls. The electrical connections can be hardwired so that no exposed cords or tubing will be visible.

Diagnostic Equipment for Headwalls

Diagnostic equipment can be mounted to 48”-60” horizontal or vertical headwalls. Additional rails can be attached in order to mount equipment onto shorter headwalls. Otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes are available with halogen or LED bulbs and specula dispensers. Wire 5” x 5” baskets, glove box holders and sharps containers can also be mounted.  Suction regulators and medical gas flowmeters are available with Ohmeda, Chemetron, DISS and Puritan-Bennett connections for simulated and functional headwalls. Instructors can take a picture of their headwalls and let the DiaMedical headwall experts match the connector fittings. Continuous suction regulators are sufficient for basic skills training while intermittent, surgical, pediatric, and neonatal options are appropriate for advanced skills and specialty areas.

Training Headwalls are available in different variants that have the functions for different types of training styles.
