Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that happens within a few minutes to hours after exposure. Symptoms typically develop rapidly after exposure. Swelling of the airways and shock can lead to death within a few minutes without immediate treatment. Epinephrine is a primary emergency drug that is used to treat anaphylaxis. It activates alpha-adrenergic receptors to reduce vasodilation that occurs with anaphylaxis. This helps maintain blood pressure, especially within the central circulation. Epinephrine also activates beta-adrenergic receptors to relax the smooth muscles within the bronchi. This helps to open the airway and relieve bronchospasm, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Epinephrine Auto-Injectors for Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis requires the injection of epinephrine into the muscle to reach the bloodstream right away. Inject epinephrine into the muscle at the first sign of anaphylaxis. Epinephrine is easier to use than needles or syringes. They are available in various models with different steps for use. Epinephrine auto-injectors come in two doses. This is because second doses are necessary at times. Epinephrine auto-injector trainers are also available to prepare for emergencies and minimize the risk of user error. They have no needles or medication and are for training purposes only.

Auvi-Q®epinephrine auto-injectors and trainers are unique because they feature audible instructions to guide users through every step of epinephrine administration. These Auvi-Q® auto-injectors are available in three color-coded dosage strengths for adults, children, and infants/toddlers. Auvi-Q® auto-injectors are sold as twin packs with a trainer.
