The COVID-19 crisis has greatly increased the need for healthcare professionals who can manage mechanical ventilation. Utilizing ventilator simulation is a great way to prepare students in pre-hospital, med-surg and long-term care courses. This blog post will explore how educators can use ventilators, tablet-based simulators and manikins to teach these important skills.
Non-invasive ventilation simulation
The refurbished Philips Respironics Vision ventilator is a cost-effective option for students to learn how to manage BiPAP ventilation. Instructors can use it with full face masks and corrugated tubing. This creates engaging non-invasive ventilation scenarios with any type of manikin. Students can practice initiating BiPAP ventilation, monitoring for complications, and evaluating the patient’s response to therapy.
Invasive ventilation options for your manikin
An endotracheal tube can easily be adapted for use with low-fidelity manikins who do not have a mouth or airway. Simply cut the tube so that it measures approximately 22 cm at the manikin’s lips. An endotracheal tube holder can be used to secure the tube in place without leaving any sticky residue on the manikin’s skin. Students can palpate a pilot balloon and adjust the cuff pressure by opening the proximal end of the cuff tubing.
Simulation invasive ventilation training
Tablet-based ventilator simulators train low fidelity manikins. The SimVS Hospital VentiSim and CAE SimEquip simulators allow instructors to manage student progress by adjusting and monitoring the patient parameters. They are ideal for nursing, respiratory therapy and paramedic training as well as interdisciplinary simulations.
You can do it!
COVID-19 has caused an immediate need for healthcare professionals who are able to care for patients who require mechanical ventilation. Simulation provides the opportunity for students to learn these essential skills in a safe environment. It can be difficult for instructors to know which manikin, ventilator or simulator is best suited for their program. The DiaMedical USA team is ready to help programs balance cost and functionality in order to find the right teaching tools to meet the learning needs of their students. Manikins, intubation supplies and skills bundles are also available to provide complete training solutions for instructors.
