These pads are important to replace every 2 years. The gel adhesive in the the pads will dry out and shrink overtime and will not be bale to deliver the appropriate shock to a victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The HeartStart OnSite Infant/Child SMART Pads are designed to be used on children 8 years of age or less than 55 pounds (25 kg) in weight, including infants. Provides voice instructions for pediatric patients and reduces the energy of the shock from 150 joules to 50 joules.
 

Why are Pediatric Pads different than Adult pads?

Pediatric pads differ in both the placement of the pads on the patient’s chest, and the amount of energy delivered to the heart. Keep the pediatric pads close to the AED. This is to ensure they are available in the case of an emergency. In case of use, place pads on the front and back of the pediatric patient. The patient is smaller than an adult and the electrical current needs a different pathway to the heart. Some facilities may choose to have their pediatric pads installed in their AED. This is common for day cares, and places with lots of children and infants present. Otherwise, keeping them close is the best course of action.
